Urban green spaces play a crucial role in improving city life, offering residents places to relax, connect with nature, and breathe cleaner air. Recognizing this, the recently launched SKYRTHALIA Vol 01 Handbook focuses on the green areas within Thessaloniki’s urban environment. This handbook is the product of a unique collaboration under the European Solidarity Corps framework, coordinated by ESAI EN ROI, involving 12 young people from across Europe. It offers fresh insights and practical guidance on preserving and enhancing Thessaloniki’s green spaces.

What SKYRTHALIA Vol 01 Brings to Thessaloniki

The handbook is more than just a guide; it is a reflection of the collective effort of young Europeans passionate about urban ecology and community well-being. It highlights the importance of green areas in Thessaloniki, a city where urban development often challenges the preservation of natural spaces.

Key features of the handbook include:

  • Detailed mapping of Thessaloniki’s main parks, gardens, and green corridors.

  • Practical tips for local communities to engage in green space maintenance and improvement.

  • Case studies showcasing successful urban greening projects in Thessaloniki and other European cities.

  • Recommendations for policymakers to support sustainable urban planning.

This handbook serves as a valuable resource for residents, city planners, environmental groups, and anyone interested in making Thessaloniki a greener, healthier city.

The Role of the European Solidarity Corps and ESAI EN ROI

The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) supports young people in contributing to community projects across Europe. Under this framework, ESAI EN ROI coordinated the SKYRTHALIA project, bringing together 12 young participants from different countries. Their diverse backgrounds enriched the handbook with a variety of perspectives on urban green spaces.

The ESC’s involvement ensured that the project not only focused on environmental issues but also fostered solidarity and cultural exchange among young Europeans. This collaboration highlights how youth engagement can lead to meaningful local impact while building European connections.

How Residents Can Use the Handbook

The SKYRTHALIA Vol 01 Handbook is designed to be accessible and actionable. Thessaloniki residents can use it to:

  • Identify nearby green areas and learn about their unique features.

  • Discover ways to participate in local green initiatives, such as community gardening or park clean-ups.

  • Understand the benefits of green spaces for health, social interaction, and biodiversity.

  • Advocate for better urban planning that prioritizes green areas.

By following the handbook’s guidance, individuals and groups can contribute to a more sustainable urban environment.

The launch of SKYRTHALIA Vol 01 marks an important step in raising awareness about urban green areas in Thessaloniki. It encourages ongoing dialogue between citizens, local authorities, and environmental organizations. The handbook’s practical approach aims to inspire continuous action and collaboration.
